Our perspective on why organ-on-chip platforms belong in long-acting therapeutics development is out in Advanced Healthcare Materials. Conventional in vitro release tests and animal models do not reproduce the coupled processes that govern how a subcutaneous depot behaves, and that predictive gap is where organ-on-chip devices earn their place: perfused vascular and lymphatic channels, a three-dimensional tissue compartment, immune cells and in-line pH and oxygen sensing.
